The project to strengthen the Karate program in Monteverde emerged as a direct response to the limited availability of recreational, sports, and educational spaces for youth in the community, as well as to the social vulnerabilities faced by many of its participants. In this context, the Karate Do Tan Ren has become a safe, structured, and formative space where children and young people find a positive alternative for their holistic development, fostering values such as discipline, respect, perseverance, and a sense of purpose.
The initiative aimed to improve the program’s conditions through the acquisition of training and competition equipment, enabling better opportunities for participants while enhancing the quality and safety of training sessions. As part of this process, specialized equipment such as protective gear, punching bags, and shields was incorporated, contributing to the development of both physical and technical skills, as well as better preparation for competitions.

The project also sought to democratize access to karate by maintaining a scholarship system for students from diverse economic backgrounds. During the implementation of their small grant in 2023–2024, the group had approximately 25 active participants, of whom at least 11 received full scholarships, ensuring that youth from different communities and educational centers could access the sport regardless of their financial situation.

Throughout the process, one of the main challenges faced was the loss of access to the gym at the Santa Elena Technical Professional High School, which had been the only institutional contribution allowing the group to offer free classes. In response, the team had to seek alternatives, including renting private spaces to continue training. This transition generated additional costs, limiting the possibility of expanding scholarships and enrolling new students, while also causing moments of discouragement and operational difficulties related to space availability and communication with potential participants.
However, the group demonstrated strong adaptability and resilience. Despite these limitations, they managed to maintain existing scholarships and ensure program continuity thanks to the commitment of coaches, students, and families. As expressed by the team in the monitoring and evaluation form: “Sometimes things cannot be perfect, but that will never take away our motivation or our vision to find a space with the highest standards of excellence and quality so that people in Monteverde can continue to have the opportunity to practice this art.”
The results achieved reflect the positive impact of strengthening the program. The incorporation of appropriate equipment and improved training conditions has contributed to participants’ athletic development, evidenced by an increase in medals and improved performance in competitions, even within a context of limited participation opportunities. The group has also maintained a presence in national and international tournaments, consolidating a high-level competitive and training process.
Beyond athletic achievements, the project’s impact extends further. For many young people, karate represents a space for emotional support, belonging, and personal growth. Regular practice fosters life skills and core values such as responsibility, honesty, respect, and resilience, while offering a positive alternative to potential risk behaviors. In a community with limited recreational options for adolescents and youth, initiatives like this play a crucial role in building well-being and social cohesion.
One of the program’s greatest achievements has been its ability to transform long-term personal trajectories. Young people who began their training during adolescence are now part of university karate teams at institutions such as the University of Costa Rica (UCR) and the National Technical University (UTN), demonstrating how a community-based space can positively influence their educational, athletic, and personal paths.
Additionally, the program has strengthened the community fabric by involving students, families, coaches, organizations, and strategic allies in a shared vision for youth development. The support of the Monteverde Community Fund has been particularly significant—not only through financial assistance, but also through institutional backing that has strengthened the group’s credibility and facilitated the development of new partnerships and sponsorships.
The Monteverde Karate project is a clear example of how sport can become a powerful tool for social transformation. Every training session, competition, and achievement represents far more than athletic progress—it symbolizes an opportunity for young people in Monteverde to build confidence, discipline, a sense of belonging, and new possibilities for their future.
Despite the challenges faced, the program’s continuity over seven years demonstrates that the combination of community commitment, passion, and proper support can sustain transformative processes over time, generating impacts that go beyond sport and contributing to the formation of better citizens and a stronger community.
