The Monteverde Sports Association (ADM in spanish) was created by a group of parents who identified the need for accessible sports opportunities for children in Monteverde and surrounding areas. Initially focused on football, the Association has gradually incorporated athletics, with growing community participation. Its core philosophy is to keep children engaged in sport, even when their families are unable to cover monthly fees.
The Association has faced significant challenges; however, its participation in the Small Grants Program (PDP in spanish), under the category of Society, Culture, and Youth, has helped strengthen the organization. ADM was awarded funding during the 2024–2025 and 2025–2026 periods. During the first year, the funds were primarily used to establish a scholarship system for children from low-income families, based on prior socioeconomic assessments. Resources were also allocated to the purchase of essential sports equipment and first aid kits, which were previously unavailable, as well as to cover transportation costs for competitions outside the region.
In this second year, efforts have focused on maintaining and strengthening the achievements of the first PDP cycle (2024–2025). This includes:
- Replacing worn-out equipment, such as balls.
- Restocking and maintaining first aid supplies.
- Continuing the scholarship program, which currently benefits 15 children, some with 50% fee reductions and others with full coverage.
Additionally, the monthly fee was reduced from 15,000 to 10,000 colones for all families, improving access to sports for children across the region.
Thanks to ongoing support from the PDP, the organization has experienced significant growth, currently serving 86 children between the ages of 7 and 13. New age categories have also been opened for younger participants.
As a counterpart contribution, ADM is part of the “Communities in Motion” program led by ICODER, which provides institutional recognition and annual support, including uniforms, as well as backing for participation in LINAFA, where they compete with other regions.
The initiative ensures equitable access to sport by reducing financial barriers and contributes to the development of children’s physical and emotional well-being, strengthening key skills such as discipline, teamwork, and resilience. This investment in children not only generates immediate benefits but also lays the foundation for future community leaders committed to Monteverde’s sustainable development.
It is also important to highlight that by supporting this initiative, the diversification of the local economy is strengthened by reinforcing the sustainability of a community-based organization that provides sports services.
